Bone health becomes more important for women as we age.
You may be familiar with osteoporosis or at least have heard of the term. But osteopenia is also a concern… What is osteopenia?
It is the beginning stage of osteoporosis. It is the loss of bone density typically seen in women age 50 & above.
Causes include natural age-related decline in bone density, hormonal changes (especially during & after menopause), and poor nutrition to name a few.
Most people don’t know they have osteopenia until they experience a broken/fractured bone. Though it can be diagnosed with a DXA scan- a test that measures bone density.
What can you do to combat osteopenia and improve your bone density?
Workout 3-5 days/week including:
Strength/resistance training
Balance training- yoga
Weight-bearing exercises- walking, dancing, jogging, climbing stairs.
As always, check with your doctor before beginning an exercise routine.
Exercise can make you look and feel great, but it is also paramount to your continued health.
Be aware of your bodily changes & be proactive in managing age-related changes.
Here’s to your health!
