Balance exercises are critical as you age. These exercises:

·       Prevent dangerous falls

·       Maintain independence

·       Strengthen the connection between your brain and muscles

Physical stability naturally declines over time, but simple training routines can help reverse this trend and keep you safe.

Key Reasons Balance Matters:

  • Fall Prevention: Falls are a leading cause of injury for adults over 65. Balance training can reduce the risk of a fall by up to 40%.

  • Preserving Independence: Good stability allows you to walk, cook, clean, and run errands without relying on others.

  • Muscle and Core Strength: Balance work engages your abdominal and leg muscles, which support your spine and joints.

  • Brain Health: Balancing challenges your nervous system and inner ear, which keeps neural pathways sharp and improves coordination.

Simple Exercises to Try:

  • Single-Leg Stand: Stand behind a stable chair or counter, lift one foot, and try to hold for 10 to 30 seconds. You can begin by holding on if needed. Once you can hold this without falling, advance the move by balancing on a foam balance pad (like in this photo).

  • Heel-to-Toe Walk: Place the heel of one foot directly in front of the toes of your other foot as you walk in a straight line.

  • Step-overs: Place an object on the floor in front of you (a small dumbbell works well). Practice stepping over the object- stepping both front & back. You can then progress this move by stepping over the object side- to- side. Progress even further by choosing a taller object to step over, which increase how high you must lift your knee to step over.

*** Always keep a wall, counter, or sturdy railing nearby when practicing these movements to prevent accidents.

Aim for balance work 2-3x a week, but even a few minutes a day can be beneficial!

Balance exercise are just one more addition to your fitness routine that should also include strength training, flexibility, & mobility training. All these components equal a well-rounded fitness routine that is necessary, especially as we age.

Keep it moving!
