The 21-Day Myth

Maybe you started a fitness journey back in January… You were ALL-IN… you committed to working out 5 days a week, you said you would eating healthy at every meal, drink 80 ounces of water a day, and get 8 hours of sleep a night, oh… and decided to take up a new meditation practice because you heard it was ‘relaxing’…
But now things are beginning to slip. You are missing workouts, eating ‘convenient’ foods & sleep… it’s been tough getting to bed earlier, like you planned. You are feeling a bit overwhelmed & defeated… and you feel like you failed.
I get it! Been there, done that!
Here’s the thing… new routines & new habits are hard to start & even harder to make STICK!
You may have heard that it takes about 21 days to form a new habit. According to researchers, THAT’S A MYTH!
The truth is… the time it takes to form a new habit varies widely, ranging from 18 to 254 days depending on the individual, the behavior, and the complexity of the habit. With the average time being 66 days!
And taking the ALL-IN approach is not realistic when it comes to forming new habits.
When attempting to form a new habit such as a fitness routine or healthy eating, here are a few TIPS:
Forming a new habit/routine takes time (more than 21 days). Be patient with yourself.
Consistency is KEY. Show up & track your progress. Consistency is what will help the new habit begin to STICK.
Try forming ONE new habit at a time. Once you feel confident in performing your one habit, add another.
Start small. Plan to workout 2 times/week at first rather than 5 days/week. Once you become consistent, you can add more days. Progress, not perfection.
You got this!
