Here is a quick lesson about cholesterol & how the foods you eat can either enhance or hinder your health.

There are 2 types of cholesterol.

1- LDL cholesterol, which is considered the 'bad' cholesterol. It can cause plaque buildup in arteries, increasing risk for heart disease.

2- HDL cholesterol or 'Happy cholesterol' helps sweep away the LDL.

Certain foods can raise your LDL levels including red & processed meats, fried foods, and desserts/sweets.

Other foods contain nutrients that can help reduce LDL levels and keep things in balance.

Here are some delicious picks to help lower your cholesterol:

  • FATTY FISH- salmon, tuna, sardines, mackerel, oysters

  • WHOLE GRAINS- brown rice, barley, oats

  • LEAFY GREENS- spinach, kale, cabbage

  • NUTS- almonds, pistachios, walnuts

  • BEANS- chickpeas, black beans- all beans deliver a good dose of soluble fiber, but chickpeas & black beans are higher in this nutrient than some other types.

Choose wisely. Stay healthy!
